Poinsettias – Extending Their Beauty Into the New Year!

If you happen to still have a poinsettia or two hanging around post holiday, they might be looking a bit sad. This is an easy way to extend the life of those gorgeous blooms with a minimal amount of effort.

If your poinsettias look like mine the leaves are the first things to look sad, so let’s rescue the best of these seasonal plants. Start by cutting the blooms off close to the base of the plant, giving you a long stem. Then fill your vase with hot water and trim the stems at an angle under hot running water at a length that fits your vase.

When cut, poinsettias release a white, sticky sap and trimming them under hot water keeps the opening of the stem from closing up. The hot water in the vase also helps keep the stems open. Recut the blooms in the same manner every few days to keep them looking fresh.
