Take a blended Scotch whisky with its rich, smoky spiciness and shake it up with the delectable orange notes of Cointreau, plus a floral touch of sweet vermouth all highlighted with a squeeze of fresh lime. This delightful cocktail might just help you conquer any task at hand!

The Engineer’s birthday is coming up and he was gifted a beautiful flight of Scotch whisky. Taking a cue from current films, I stumbled across a classic cocktail created in the late 1930s for the legendary Winston Churchill. Though it was well known that Churchill was a Scotch drinker, it’s said he wasn’t necessarily fond of cocktails. Though he might have made an exception for this creation.

Start with a generous pour of a fragrant Scotch whisky followed by a splash of Cointreau and sweet vermouth. Finish with freshly squeezed lime juice to brighten things up.

Give it a good shake over ice until the cocktail is quite cold and pour up in your favorite coupe.

This is a classic well-suited for any legend in your life.

The Churchill Cocktail

5 tablespoons Scotch whisky

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon Cointreau

1 tablespoon sweet vermouth

1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice

Ice for shaking

Pour the whisky into a cocktail shaker along with the Cointreau.

Add the sweet vermouth and the lime juice.

Top with ice and shake until the drink is very cold. Strain into a coupe and serve the drink well-chilled.

Makes one cocktail.
